I am originally from Wayne County in south central Iowa, and now live in Polk County with my wife Jaclyn and our black lab Chase.
I majored in Environmental Science at Simpson College and later received my J.D. from Drake University, focusing on environmental, agricultural, and land-use law. For about seven years in between, I worked on non-game bird research projects all over the country. Now I work for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources as an environmental attorney.
My outdoor interests began with fishing and hunting, then shifted to serious birding. I’m currently serving my second term on the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union Records Committee and am a past vice president, Christmas Bird Count editor, and Winter Field Reports editor. I probably spend as much or more time chasing and photographing insects as birds at this point. There’s never enough time or good weather it seems.
I am a very average photographer so far, but I enjoy documenting the various creatures I come across. I recently upgraded to a DSLR from a little 4mp point and shoot, so I’m hoping that will make a big difference once I figure out what all the buttons and dials are for.

She’s right! Glad to catch up with a cool former student.
